Abrassive Jet machining process ( A J M) :-

:-  Abrassive jet machining is the mechanical Operation . It is also called non - conventional machining process . The principle of abrassive jet machining involves the use of a high speed stream of abrassive particles carried by high pressure gas or air on the work surface through a nozzle . The metal removal occurres due to erosion by abrassive particles impacting  the work surface at high speed . With repeated impact small bit of material get loosen and fresh surface is exposed to the set . The filler gas supplied under a high pressure ( 2 to MPA ) to the mixing chamber containing the abrassive powder and vibrating at 50Hz . The abrassive and gas mixture immerge from a small nozzle mounted on a surface at high velocity . Abrassive are generally employed as silicon carbide , Aluminum oxide , Sodium bicarbonate . The abrassive powder feed rate is controlled by the amplitude of vibration of the mixing chamber. The pressure regulator controlled the gas flow . To control the size and shape either the workpiece or nozzle is move by cam . The gas should be cheap and non toxic and easily available . Aluminum oxide is used for general purpose like machining , grooving and cutting . Silicon carbide is used for faster machining of harden material . Sodium bicarbonate is used for finishing the workpiece . Here nozzle are made tungsten carbide because of wear resistance . Metal removal rate depends upon the diameter of the nozzle , composition of abrassive gas mixture , and jet pressure .

Advantages :-

:-       It can machined any type of harden material .
:-      Brittle material of thin section  can be easily machined .
:-.      Low capital investment are required .
:-        There is no direct contact between work piece & tool .

Application:-

:- This process is widely used for machining brittle material like Glass , ceramics etc.
